as american forces fought their way up through italy against a very well-trained, very well-equipped professional german opposition, dan inouye was a proud member of this battalion. and in fierce combat, dan inouye was gravely wounded on the battlefield. he was brought home. he was, as we all know, lost his arm in that -- as one of the wounds that he sustained. and interestingly and coincidentally, he went to a veterans hospital in chicago where a person in the same ward with also grievous wounds was another american army, actually second lieutenant who had also been wounded seriously in italy, one bob dole. second lieutenant bob dole of kansas. and there began a friendship that lasted to this day. both gravely wounded, both dedicated more than ever to serve their country. both served with distinction. and the friendship, the bonds of friendship that were forged in that hospital between bob dole and dan inouye were unique and enduring. so dan inouye returned back to his beloved hawaii, and the story goes -- and i don't know if it's true or not. the story goes that dan inouye went dow

almost 70 years ago, when he came home to kansas from battlesfields of italy in a full body cast, people said that bob had never had to work another day in his life. that's what they said. he was a hero. he'd made his contribution. but bob dole worked every single day to stand and to walk and to use his arms again. he made himself get out of that bed and he made himself a public servant and a united states senator and the republican nominee for president in 1996. but his greatest pride was passing the americans with disabilities act. bob dole, why is he here? he's not here because he's here to advocate for the united nations. and certainly this man who served his country is not here because he doesn't want to defend the sovereignty of the united states of america. he is here because he wants to know that other countries will come to treat the disabled the way we do. he's here because he wants to know that what -- when a disabled american veteran, our wounded warriors, travel overseas, that they're treated with the same dignity and respect that they receive here at home. that's why an 89-

in 1945, daniel inouye led his unit in a successful attack against german fortifications in northern italy. the valor, courage, selflessness and determination that he displayed during the battle are the stuff of legend. and this would later earn him the congressional medal of honor. during this attack, he sustained serious permanent injuries that served as a constant reminder of his sacrifice for our country. senator inouye began his political career as a member of a wise territorial house of representatives -- as a member of hawaii's territorial house of representatives in 1954. almost immediately his colleagues tapped him as the majority leader of that body. his tremendous leadership ability was already apparent then. he then ascended to the territorial senate in 1958 and became hawaii's first u.s. congressman with the tkpwrafpbgt statehood in 19 -- granting of statehood in 1959. three years later he became a member of the u.s. senate elected a staggering nine consecutive terms, continuing to serve until his death this week. i believe his effectiveness as a senator and his devotion to hi
